Halloween is a holiday celebrate by thousands upon thousands of teens and even adults. While not every country keeps the Halloween tradition, hundreds of thousands of children can be found trick-or-treating in the United States and in many other especially those of Anglo-Saxon background. While some love Halloween, there are some who are just as passionately in opposition to this holiday. Interesting are the pagan origins of the celebration the history of which stretches back thousands of years to the ancient pagans who existed even before Jesus' day.

Here are some historical facts about the origin of Halloween:

Halloween's roots date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. It is said to have commenced with the Celts. The Celts lives around 2,000 years ago in what is now the United Kingdom, Ireland and northern France. The celebration at that time was on November 1 or October 31.

The idea was associated with the the beginning of the cold winter, dark and associated with fear of death. Celts had superstitious ideas and truly believed that on the night before, the boundaries between the world of the living and dead became blurred. They believed that the ghosts of lives of the dead returned to the earth or revisited their homes. In addition to the malevolence associated with these bad spirits, Celts felt that the presence of these spirits made it easier for the priests to predict the future. These prophecies were help much importance for largely illiterate, such as the Celts. They celebration took on sinister significance, with hobgoblins which were believed to be roaming about on that spooky evening.

People burned bonfires on hilltops to frighten the wicked spirits and demons, and people sacrificed both crops and animal sacrifices to pagan gods. Costumes clothed those celebrating, and they most often were animal heads and skins.

The name Halloween has its origins in the Catholic Church. By the ninth-century, the festival had been influenced the mixture of paganism and Christianity that had become a part of Catholicism. Immigrants then brought the customs associated with Halloween to the United States, . These then became popular around the late nineteenth century. Halloween has always been a holiday of evil. Because of the forgoing reasons and the history of Halloween, many Christians of various genres, do not celebrate the holiday.

Costumes From'50

Halloween is coming up again, and like everyone else, I am thinking about what costumes I might want to get for the holiday this year. Halloween costumes are something I take pretty seriously, despite the fun nature of dressing up as someone (or something) else for a night. I know it's supposed to be all fun and games, but I believe that the more effort you put into it, the more fun it will be for everyone.

Lately, I've been thinking more and more about period costumes from some point in human history. More specifically, I'm thinking about great'50's costumes. If you are stuck with what to dress up as for Halloween, perhaps some of my ideas for'50's costumes will do the trick (no Halloween pun intended).

First of all, when going for a period look like'50's costumes, I try to be careful not to do what is too easy or expected. In fact, the appeal of'50's costumes is that it is a little something different. For that reason, I try to avoid the most popular of'50's costumes; the'50's teenager look. Teenagers and pop culture or youth culture first emerged in the'50's and the subsequent poodle shirts and the leather-jacket, gelled-haired greasers are the result. These costumes are classic and time-honored and, frankly, a good choice. But they are a little too easy in my book. Let's dig deeper.

I like to think about the time period I'm working with and think about getting more specific. There were lots of people wearing poodle skirts and saddle shoes, but there was only one James Dean, for instance. Trying to model a specific celebrity or character is a great approach to'50's costumes.

In that spirit, I like thinking about some of the celebrities, and not just Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley. For instance, why not take Audrey Hepburn's iconic look in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? That is easily understood and seldom seen in costume parties these days. Also, for whatever reason, James Dean is remembered as the'50's heart-throb, but Marlon Brando was just as big. And if you can pull off dressing as one of the Rat Pack, you should win your costume party contests, as far as I'm concerned. Working on'50's costumes that are a little different or unique is not as hard as it looks. And, as far as I'm concerned, the extra effort is worth the awesome and unique costume for this Halloween. - 30055

Many Americans hold a soft spot in the hearts for the'80's. I was born in'84 and even though I was very young for the duration of the'80's I seem to hold the same memories of the'80's that older people do.

1980's music, movies, TV shows and fashion seem to be what people reference when discussing the decade. Many songs, shows and movies from the'80's are being remade because people feel nostalgic when experiencing the media.'80's fashion is perhaps the most untouched area of pop culture that has been carried over, meaning that people dress in clothes that are not interpreted from the'80's, but instead are actually from the'80's. The piece of clothing that is perhaps most discussed then and now is the 80's prom dress.

Since the'80's had a thread of excess running through the decade, the prom dresses produced were considered very cool. "The bigger the better" was definitely the motto and since prom is the most formal event of a high school student's experience, people spared no expense on an 80's prom dress.

A typical 80's prom dress was bright in color and some popular choices included: tangerine, teal, magenta and fuchsia. Many girls chose short dresses over long chiffon dresses from the'70's. An 80's prom dress needed to be bold and cosmopolitan and a great bright color helped pump up the energy.

Another fashion rule from the 80's was that over-accessorizing was impossible. The attitude was the more styles going on in a single outfit, the better. This of course applied to prom dresses. The construction and shape the dress made on the body was very important. You had to have the biggest impact and sleek silhouettes were not in style. Some had ruching, or bunching up on the sides. Some were asymmetrical or had geometric cutouts or prints. Another well-known characteristic of an 80's prom dress was over-sized shoulders and puffy sleeves.

An 80's prom dress typically had a lot of detailed appliqus, sequins, bugle beads, netting and rhinestones. These dresses were pricey but well worth the effect. The dresses were accessorized with clutch purses, big jewelry, and metallic high heels and sometimes patterned tights. These days, an 80's prom dress can be purchased from consignment or thrift shops. Many nightclubs have 80's night and many parties are 80's themed. Even though the 80's prom dress is now worn as a joke, many others 80's clothing is not. - 30055

With Halloween fast approaching, many people are beginning to think about their Halloween costumes, and for good reason. A Halloween costume is easy to overlook and many people end up trying to find some sort of costume at the last minute, and mostly what you will find in this situation is a big headache and maybe a costume that does not quite fit. That is why thinking a little ahead - even just two weeks - can be a big help. This year, I am thinking a lot about period costumes and specifically, about 80's costumes.

80's costumes make sense as a Halloween costume this year (or any year) for several reasons. First of all, we are still in the midst of a general retro 80's period where throwbacks to the 80s are very much in style. Second, 80's costumes are a great option because so many of the clothes and fashions from the'80's look like they might costumes anyway; it takes only a little bit of imagination to bring it all the way to 80's costume territory.

When I deal with period costumes, I like to think beyond the obvious. The way I do this is to come up with a list of 80's celebrities. Celebrities are notorious for trying to follow the latest fashions, and looking back in time, you will see that the most 80's looking people are celebrities. People like Madonna, Michael Jackson and Don Johnson epitomize in one way or another a definite 80's look and are great ideas for 80's costumes.

Excluding those three though, celebrities are sometimes difficult to turn into an 80's costume. This is because, even though the celebrities are dressing at the height of fashion at the time, they still are just people dressed in clothes; many of them do not wear clothes that scream "costume". For this reason, I like looking at specific characters the celebrities might have played in a movie. A great example of this is Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Dressing in a flight suit with "Maverick" on it is a great idea for 80's costumes.

Whatever your approach to 80's costumes might be, bring your own ideas and creativity to it to allow your costume idea to really pop at your Halloween costume party this year. Great 80's costumes are always appreciated by those that like really clever and fun Halloween costumes. - 30055

Nothing is more peaceful that grazing across beautiful acres of lush green land. Until the zombies, that's right, zombies pop out of the ground faster than weeds! What to do? Zombie season is here and nothing is worse than not being ready.

Seth Grahame-Smith gave an insight to zombie preparation by taking a twist on Jane Austen's book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The mystery of who is undead and who isn't accompanies the basic story line. Don't worry, the romantic story remains unblemished, except for the additional zombie action sequences.

The Bennett daughters remain in their same character, but are also trained zombie killers. Darcy is well known for his mass slaughter of the undead. The whole reason Netherfield Park becomes vacant is because of an unfortunate zombie attack. I found these to be humorous additions to the story indeed.

My initial response was very excited about this, but the more I read it, I unfortunately saw very little literary merit to it. Come to think of it, zombie movies don't really have any value either. It's fun and unique, but frankly it is a wee bit boring, even with zombies. There are some places that zombies just shouldn't be, and Pemberly is one of them.

Seth Grahame-Smith obviously had just one intention with writing this. He wanted to take a classic tasteful novel and turn into a manfest. It would be like me writing a novel about James Bond, but instead of him being an international secret agent, he's making potpourri. I admire your ambition and unique ideas, Seth, but Jane Austen is the novelist of the century for a reason. Read it for yourselves, but never let go of the original.

This Halloween season, Haunted Attraction Magazine will be sponsoring a Grand Tour of Haunted Houses throughout the country. It will be like their version of the CBS's popular reality show - The Amazing Race.

Over 70 haunted houses, hayrides and haunted trails from 24 states is taking place in this review. Reviewer John Kennedy will be the man to be traveling around seeing these attractions and giving you the latest news and interesting details on some of the counties most popular haunted houses.

October 12th, was the day that this tour took a stop in Denver to check out their haunted houses. During this stop John was able to stop at 4 of
Denver's popular Haunted Houses, first was Primitive Fear and 13th Street Manor in Commerce City and finished up with the legendary 13th Door Haunted House and Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch in South Denver. Here is a small section in Johns blog that we wrote after visiting the 13th door and Slaughterhouse Gulch.

"My second stop of the night took me to visit The 13th Door and Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch Haunted Houses. These two haunts are located in a former shopping center in Denver but are very different haunts. I visited 13th Door Haunted House first.

The haunt is themed as a hotel with a good story behind the haunt. The Barrington Hotel was owned by wealthy Denver Millionaire, John Barrington. On a cold October night in 1912, John Barrington, was throwing his annual All Hallows Eve party in the Hotel's Penthouse suite. Unfortunately, a disgruntled nephew with a gambling problem starts a fire killing everyone inside, except for one person who found the 13th door.

Unfortunately, I got there later in the evening and had to go through by myself, but I still enjoyed the haunt. The haunt has good scenes and energetic actors who were doing their best to scare. There is a good variety of scenes and has plenty of dark spaces.

The second haunt I visited was Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch which is similar to 13th Door but edgier and more intense. As you can guess by the name, it is a slaughterhouse themed haunt. This attraction featured solid scenes and enthusiastic actors just like 13th Door."

At the end of this Grand Tour ends it will have gone as far as 15,000 miles! Most of the tour will traveled via the trusty Haunted Attraction Hybrid with a couple airplane trips to get out west.

Have you been dreading the same question: 'What am I going to be for Halloween this year?' With so many choices and so little time, I have no idea where to start and I definitely don't want to open up the old trunk and recycle something again. The problem is I've been everything before. Name it and I've probably been it: cheerleader, devil, angel, nurse, schoolgirl, punk, princess. From Florence Nightingale to Raggedy-Ann, I've done it. This year I want something fresh, something outside the normal Halloween box.

So, having exhausted the normal, cookie-cutter routes, I began looking into burlesque Halloween costumes. A friend introduced me to the alluring world of burlesque this past year. The raw sexiness lured me in almost immediately. As I sat there with hands folded tight in my lap, the lights went down over the small intimate stage. A slow sexy groove rises from the speakers. Shadows themselves begin to dance. I dim red light comes to life above the darkened stage. This is the world of burlesque.

Then, as I sat there holding my breath, my relatively shy friend with a body type like mine (slightly overweight with an uncanny resemblance to a pear) dressed in a sexy 1950's striptease outfit appeared onstage and began to dance. It was so strange, almost otherworldly. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My shy friend had been transformed into a sexy, confident woman proud to celebrate her body. I was so mesmerized by her onstage liberation that I am considering joining her burlesque troupe this winter!

But I couldn't wait! So I went online and bought two burlesque Halloween costumes online. I can't wait to try them on and start practicing sultry dance moves in front of the mirror.
